Boosting School Performance Through Nutritious School Meals

Wicor Primary School, has been teaching young students aged four to eleven years for close to ninety years. Today, the school teaches four hundred and twenty-five pupils in fourteen classes. Wicor Primary School partnered with Dolce School Catering in order to strengthen their approach to well-being, nutrition, and engagement.

Dolce School Catering has been providing high-quality, nutritional, and healthy school meals for more than twenty-five years, passionate in improving healthy eating, both at school and home. Dolce implemented a number of practical curriculum-aligned cooking workshops, helping pupils and their families adopt healthy eating habits, reinforcing the link between school performance and good nutrition.

Wicor Primary’s challenge was increasing pupil’s understanding of a balanced diet, while encouraging parents to participate in healthy eating at home, creating a connection between sustainability, food education, and school-grown produce. They turned to Dolce to deliver more than nutritious meals, but to inspire healthier eating choices, while supporting the schools’ learning goals.

The Dolce team created a programme of hands-on cooking classes for pupils and families focusing on healthy cooking, simple nutritious meals, along with using seasonal and sustainable ingredients, which included the schools-grown fruits and vegetables, that Dolce used in their dessert selection. The programme encouraged collaborative learning with parents, children, and the Dolce catering team cooking, tasting, and learning together. This approach promoted healthier choices at school and home, strengthening the role of food for learning and well-being.

This initiative between Wicor Primary School and Dolce School Catering provided measurable and observable improvements with families reporting they feel more capable in preparing healthy meals with a better understanding on nutrition. Pupils demonstrated their improved knowledge of balanced diets, which the teachers saw improved focus and engagement during afternoon lessons. This, in turn, improved a sense of community through shared workshops, strengthening the relationship between parents, pupils, and staff, with pupils being more willing to try new dishes. At the same time, it improved enthusiasm around school meals, while reinforcing sustainability values.

Conclusion

Wicor Primary Schools partnering with Dolce clearly shows how school catering supports student performance and well-being. Combining nutritious meals with food education, and community engagement, Dolce helped to encourage healthier habits, boosting engagement. This case study demonstrates Dolce’s commitment to delivering a meaningful learning experience, not just meals, helping to improve health, confidence, and educational outcomes.
