Thursby Primary School, under their previous provider, had suffered a turbulent period following the retirement of their cook and the re-staffing of their kitchen. They wanted a caterer who could settle staffing issues, increase uptake and provide food education and they chose Dolce.
In the first year of the contract we managed to settle staff issues and implement two cookery classes per week (as an after-school’s club) and provide food education lessons in the classroom.
Subsequently uptake increased from around 50% to a near perfect 95% within the first 18 months of the contract.
After achieving the increase in meal uptake across the school, we were able to implement extracurricular activities such as the popular cookery classes.
Pupils take part in regular cookery classes every Thursday, co-ordinated by one of our experienced Area Managers. During each class pupil’s get hands on creating meals straight out of the Dolce recipe book including homemade pizzas, fresh salads and even desserts. We provide all of the ingredients, aprons and utensils – all the children need to do is turn up and have fun.
The class is designed to not only teach pupils how to make healthy meals from scratch, it also demonstrates a variety of basic culinary skills they can use in the future.
We have been successfully running the classes at Thursby Primary School for the last 12 months.
